September 10, 2006 - The 6th almost annual DCFiats Chesapeake Bay Cruise
Why does the Gillagin's Island theme song keep going through my head whenever the DCFiats almost annual boat cruise pulls out of the slip each year? On this boat I am the first mate and my abilities on Fiats has made more than one-person think of Gilligan.
Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
a tale of an uneventful trip.
That started from this west river port,
aboard this shiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailin' man,
the skipper brave and sure.
Twenty Eight Fiat freaks set sail that day,
for a six hour tour, a six hour tour...
The weather started getting beautiful,
the shiny ship's journey was smooth.
If not for the knowledge of the fearless crew,
the Dream Beam could get lost; the Dream Beam could get lost.
The ship took a turn around Annapolis,
with Todd, Skipper Bob too,
the Police officer, and his Wife,
the Musician, the Theater teacher and rest,
here on the Fiat Cruise.
Okay, I took some liberties with the song, but I hope you get the idea that this year's cruise went as smooth as the water on the Bay. Everyone had a great time letting Bob do the driving for a change.

The boat we all boarded is the Dream Beam owned by Bob and Carole our gracious hosts for the day.

Spending the day on the bay cruising at a fast 10 knots is very strenuous on the passengers. We tried our hardest to relax.

The day started with a quick cruise to a small bay near Annapolis for a fix your own sandwich deli lunch. We pasted Thomas Point Lighthouse on the way, which was the lasted manned lighthouse in the US until about 10 years ago. After lunch it was time to take a spin around Annapolis Harbor and the Naval Academy. Our boat looked very small compared to some boats anchored in the Annapolis Harbor. Seeing Annapolis by boat is the best way to view Maryland's capitol.

On the way back to the Lighthouse the sky cleared to provide an excellent view of the Bay Bridge off the port side of the boat.

This is one of my favorite events of the DCFiats calendar even though most people did not even bring an Italian car. What everyone brought was their families. This event shows off the next generation of Fiat Freaks. There were 7 kids on the cruise as well as dates and spouses. In fact only one person was there without family or date (Hi Tom).

I hope next year goes as smoothly. Mark your calendars now for September 8, 2007 (tentative).
